A few months ago, I got myself an EAR 834P w/ the volume pot. The (3) tubes are stock & bear the logo of EAR. The spartan manual states that the (3) tubes are 12AX7s. I want to tube roll, so I have some NOS Matsushita 12AX7s. The tubes at V1 & V2 have the same construction and are identical. I replaced these.

EAR 834P Modification Guide. The EAR 834P is a very simple, but rather smartly designed Circuit, implemented by EAR in a rather skinflint fashion. Phonostages; EAR 834P. Ultra-compact high performing valve phonostage. Its simple and versatile design allows for easy setup with stunning performance.

The one thing that I would strongly recommend (as the owner of a fully balanced phono stage) you look into, especially when you upgrade to the lower output Grado, is using the balanced inputs on the Project. Not only would the 56 dB gain setting using the balanced inputs be ideal (using the balanced in with your MM would be less than ideal IMO but you did not seem to have an issue with even more gain than they would provide when you were using the 50 dB gain setting), chances are the phono stage would provide even better performance than you're experiencing now. The only thing that is not clear to me from the Project literature is whether the balanced inputs can be used with the single ended outputs on the RS or whether they can only be used with the balanced outputs.

Other than hearing many pops (I haven't cleaned it with the rcm yet), it sounded great to my ears. I plan on doing more listening tonight and just playing the albums with good sound. I started getting the impression that the 834p paints a little broader picture than my other stages.

I have another question regarding the unit itself. This is my first tube component and I noticed (at least I think) the sound improving as the unit warmed up. My question is how long should I let the unit warm up before I start my listening session? I just started leaving my other equipment on all the time but don't feel like that is a good idea with the 834p. Just a hunch. I'm getting back into vinyl and I never paid much attention to all this stuff when I was younger.

Good evening all, I just rec'd a slightly used Ear 834p off of Audiogon and have a couple of questions. It didn't come with a manual so I was curious if there was a place online that might have a 'downloadable' version. I did a google search and looked at the vinyl engine website. I'm not a member there though so I used their basic search and couldn't find one.

Pablo After Michael Franks I was no nearer than I had been before, surly Ella would come to my rescue. Put the Album on using the Project and Ella stepped into my Living room and sang to me. At last a winner. I then played her through the EAR and Ella Stepped into my living room and sang to me. Back to my dilemma. How do I pick one of these fine Phono Stages.
